These news leaves mixed feelings 🤷♂️
IT industry continues to decline, AI will replace programmers, who is the prompt engineer and new big players join EdTech. A lot to unpack.
Hey,
There has been no shortage of negative news in recent weeks, with the IT market still not having reached the bottom. Which is pretty crazy for all the people affected 🤯
A few weeks ago SoDA released the results of a survey for the 4Q of 2023 in which it shows what the mood in the industry is like. The owners of software houses, apart from assessing the previous year as very difficult, also expect a difficulties in 2024. We are already in April, almost a third of the year is behind us, the fears seem to be coming true 100%.
This also appears in the apparent downtrend of available professionals on the benches in these organisations. 📉 Declining numbers by no means mean that they have found employment. Rather, it is the result of redundancies or a change in the industry/specialisation of these individuals.
Being on the bench in a software house means that specific people are being retained - but they are waiting for a full-time project, often these people are doing smaller tasks for a chunk of full-time or working on internal projects.
To add insult to injury…
The world has been abuzz with the news that Nvidia's CEO believes that programmers will use English as the only programming language and that there is actually no need to train more programmers.
To top it all off, a new language model and assistant for developers - Devin - has emerged that can supposedly solve almost 15% of real GitHub issues and can handle consoles and other development tools like a human engineer would do.
…so in theory it is a viable replacement for a programmer…
However, I have not yet been able to test this one in practice, I tested a few alternative - and they are still far from replacing a real engineer. From my point of view, we are still safe 😅 and those will be just tools enhancing and make developers work more effective. The hardest part of software engineering is managing requirements and dealing with stakeholders - and at those parts AI is unable to replace us. At least for now.
Interesting moves in Education and Technology confluence
On the other hand, in the world of EdTech, two very interesting and positive pieces of news emerged last weeks.
The first will be of interest to anyone curious about bitcoin and blockchain. The former CEO of the Binance (CZ) exchange (who has recently had problems with US law) seems to have decided to fix the world. He announced that he will create a free platform to increase the number of literate people in the world.
Surprisingly according to the data he cites 75% of teenagers in the world cannot read nor write. 🧐 The platform is to be called Giggle Academy.
The second is the news that Spotify is also entering the world of education and will also offer audio courses in its inventory. Unfortunately, this update is not available in Poland.
So what does it mean for the EdTech community?
These are two more big players from the world of big business who are noticing the importance of education. Which, from my perspective, is a strong predictor that the EdTech industry will grow and has a bright future.
Importantly, I believe that this will not be without sacrifice. What works now and has worked for years will have to change or be forgotten.
Get ready for a (r)evolution! 🚀
